Receiving a wheel that matches the specification of the previous one is reassuring, but it is not a guarantee of identical behaviour on the machine. Bond batches, grain distribution, balance and mounting conditions all vary slightly, and a wheel that looks the same on paper may behave differently in the first minutes of contact with the workpiece. The professional approach is simple: confirm the actual running condition first, then step up to normal machining parameters gradually.

Why a Gradual Start Pays Off

A wheel that is run at full load immediately gives the operator very little information and no margin. If something is wrong — an imbalance, a seating problem, an incorrect grade for the material — the first evidence appears as a burned surface, a chipped edge or a vibration that has already been transmitted through the spindle. A staged start, beginning with light passes at reduced infeed, lets the wheel settle on its seat, lets the bond open up and gives the operator time to read the machine's response before production tolerances are at stake.

Six Signals to Observe During the First Trial Grinding

No. What to Observe What Indicates a Problem
1Machine sound during runningNew howling, knocking or intermittent noise compared with the previous wheel
2Abnormal vibrationVibration that increases with speed or does not settle after the first passes
3Stability of the cutting actionJuddering, grabbing or inconsistent spark pattern across the contact area
4Workpiece surface qualityUnexpected chatter marks, scratches, burn marks or a finish outside specification
5Heat generation during machiningAbnormal temperature rise in the wheel, workpiece or coolant
6Machine loadSpindle current or power draw noticeably higher than the previous stable condition

Reading the Signals Correctly

  • Sound is usually the earliest indicator. Operators who know their machine can hear a change in pitch long before a gauge shows it.
  • Vibration that worsens with speed points to balance or mounting; vibration that appears only under load points to grade, bond or feed rate.
  • Spark pattern is a fast diagnostic: an uneven spark curtain suggests the wheel is not seated true or the working face is not yet fully open.
  • Surface marks such as regular chatter lines usually trace back to runout or insufficient rigidity, while random scratches suggest loose abrasive or contamination.
  • Heat without a matching load increase often means the wheel is too hard or the coolant is not reaching the contact zone.
  • Spindle load is the most objective comparison available — record the value from the previous wheel as a baseline before installing the new one.

When the Wheel Is New in More Than Name

For a redesigned non-standard wheel, a new abrasive material or a new manufacturing process, the trial run becomes a genuine evaluation rather than a confirmation. In these cases, record the parameters and the results in a simple trial log:

  1. Wheel identification, specification, batch and mounting date.
  2. Machine, spindle speed, feed rate, depth of cut and coolant condition.
  3. Observed sound, vibration, spark pattern and temperature behaviour.
  4. Measured surface finish, dimensional result and wheel wear after the trial.
  5. Spindle load compared with the reference baseline.

With two or three trials documented in this way, feed and speed can be adjusted on evidence instead of intuition, and the resulting parameter set becomes a reusable standard for the next delivery.

A Habit Worth Standardising

A staged trial run costs a few minutes; a scrapped batch, a damaged spindle or an operator injury costs far more. Making the six-signal check a mandatory step for every new wheel — whether it is a repeat order or a redesigned product — turns quality control into something that happens continuously on the shop floor rather than only in the inspection room. Suppliers who provide trial guidance, recommended starting parameters and a documented baseline for their wheels make that standard easy to keep.
